This tree is as mission itself, the tree
planted in 1868 by Fr Antony Horner ‘(CssP) to mark the official opening date
of Bagamoyo Catholic Mission has therefore a remarkable history
Many stories are told about tree but many
more about chain which can you see near the root,
The only true story is
Very soon as the Missionary sisters had
started to take of the care sick, a hospital was built just behind the tree,
The French nurse madame de Chavalier who was running the dispensary in Zanzibar from 1884-1895 in came Bagamoyo to
help the sisters
She used to come to work to riding a donkey,
she fixed the chain to the tree to tie her donkey with it. When the tree grew
thicker and thicker it swallowed more and more the chain
